Increasing sequential tropical cyclone hazards along the US East and Gulf coasts

چکیده

Abstract Two tropical cyclones (TCs) that make landfall close together can induce sequential hazards to coastal areas. Here we investigate the change in TC historical and future projected climates. We find chance of has been increasing over past several decades at many US locations. Under high (moderate) emission scenario, from two TCs impacting same location within 15 days may substantially increase, with return period decreasing century 10–92 years ~1–2 (1–3) along East Gulf coasts, due sea-level rise storm climatology change. Climate also cause unprecedented compounding extreme regional level. A Katrina-like a Harvey-like United States each other, which is non-existent control simulation for 1,000 years, have an annual occurrence probability more than 1% by end under scenario.

Tropical Cyclone Intensity Change before U.S. Gulf Coast Landfall

Tropical cyclone intensity change remains a forecasting challenge with important implications for such vulnerable areas as the U.S. coast along the Gulf of Mexico. Analysis of 1979–2008 Gulf tropical cyclones during their final two days before U.S. landfall identifies patterns of behavior that are of interest to operational forecasters and researchers. Tropical storms and depressions strengthen...

Shellfish and residual chemical contaminants: hazards, monitoring, and health risk assessment along French coasts.

In this review, we address the identification of residual chemical hazards in shellfish collected from the marine environment or in marketed shellfish. Data, assembled on the concentration of contaminants detected, were compared with the appropriate regulatory and food safety standards. Moreover, data on human exposure and body burden levels were evaluated in the context of potential health ris...

Impact of Stinging Jellyfish Proliferations along South Italian Coasts: Human Health Hazards, Treatment and Social Costs

Stinging jellyfish outbreaks represent a health hazard, causing contact dermatitis and systemic reactions. This study investigated the epidemiology, severity, and treatment protocols of jellyfish stings in a coastal area with high tourist development and frequent stinging jellyfish outbreaks of the central Mediterranean (Salento, Southern Italy), and the associated costs for the Italian Nationa...

Vegetation phenology gradients along the west and east coasts of Greenland from 2001 to 2015

The objective of this paper is to characterize the spatiotemporal variations of vegetation phenology along latitudinal and altitudinal gradients in Greenland, and to examine local and regional climatic drivers. Time-series from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) were analyzed to obtain various phenological metrics for the period 2001-2015. MODIS-derived land surface tempe...

Can the Gulf Stream Induce Coherent Short-Term Fluctuations in Sea level along the US East Coast?: A Modeling Study

Much attention has been given in recent years to observations and models that show that variations in the transport of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and in the Gulf Stream (GS) can contribute to interannual, decadal, and multi-decadal variations in coastal sea level (CSL) along the US East Coast. However, less is known about the impact of short-term (time scales of days...
